Welcome to ENGL 101!

Read this syllabus and post to the blog a brief entry, something along the lines of: “After reading the syllabus these are the questions I have about the course… These are my attitudes about/experiences with reading and writing…”

You may also use this space to tell me and your classmates anything else about yourself you’d like to share.

  1. After reading the syllabus, I am concerned that I will not always complete my assignments on time due to other college related commitments. However, I am very dedicated to work very hard to succeed in class. I am very quiet and shy and hoping to make friends at college.

    1. Hi Ethan:
A big part of college is time management. If you're not already keeping one, I urge you to keep a calendar w/ all your due dates on it.

  2. After reading this Syllabus, I feel prepared and ready for what assignments English have for me. I can do the assignments ahead of time so they can be ready for the due date. I am happy to read new books that I haven’t read yet, and I hope that I like them. I am excited to learn new things in English and become a better writer. I like how you introduced us to group work and that our peers with be revising our work. It’s great to hear good and bad things about your work so you can fix it . I can’t wait to start sharing my drafts and creative writings with the class. I can’t wait to see what this English class holds for me.

  3. After reading the syllabus the questions I have about the course is to differentiate what we will do in the Tuesday and Thursday classes. On Tuesdays I know we have the lab room and wanted to know if when were in that class would we be working on the same thing in the class prior to it , our would the work be more computer bases. I am looking forward to learn more about the class and hopefully improve on my writing skills since it’s one of my weakest points, but I’m always open to the idea of expanding my skills. Im looking forward to talking to new people and hopefully find friends .

    1. Hi Marinda: Mostly on Tuesdays, we'll discuss readings and write on the blog and work on our drafts. On Thursdays, we'll usually work in groups on drafts and sometimes prepare for upcoming assignments.

  5. The syllabus is clear and straightforward. I'm glad a clear theme for the course was stated early on. I see on the syllabus that we will be reading the required texts in class, and I would like to know if it is required that we read them outside of class as well. I hope to find the class enjoyable and I look forward to the two books we will be reading.

    1. HI Hank:
Yes, you're required to do the reading prior to arriving in class on the date stated. So, for instance, you should have read Chs 1-4 in Malcolm X by the time you arrive in class on Tues. 9/10.
