ENGL 101 Blog First Week

For this first week of the blog, I would like you to write about your experience in the group critique on Tuesday. Some questions I have:

  • Have you ever participated in an activity like this before? In what ways was it new for you? What did you find helpful about it? What was less helpful? How would you suggest we change it going forward, if at all?
  • What did you learn about your literacy narrative from your group? What steps do you need to take next in composition and/or revision?
For one of your responses this week, I would like you to respond to a classmate's post about their draft. What bit of advice can you give them?

You may also write about Malcolm X if you've begun reading.

  1. I've never done a group activity quite like this one, and I found it to be very helpful. It was a good way of forcing us to work together and really listen to each other's work. I realized through annotating other people's essays some areas for improvement in my own essay. I was also interested to hear the critiques that my group had.The activity was also helpful in alleviating some reservations I had about reading my work in front of others. I was a little nervous at first, but after listening to my group read their stories, I was ready to read mine.

    1. I agree with Hank because I felt the same about the group critics. It was very helpful and I cannot wait to do many more.It was a little scary at first with reading my story, but later on I got comfortable.

    3. also agree with Shania and Hank because I've never worked with a group where i actually had fun working with my group members Marinda, Bhargav, and myself had the opportunity to share thoughts and comments on each others essay. I think personally for me working in a group was good way to improve on my work because getting suggestion and pointers on what i could of done better its a good way for me to learn not make the same mistakes next time.

  2. My experiences with the activity was good at most part as only half of us had the four copies of the draft (Thanks Prof. John Talbird for the copies) but did learn a lot from each other as it help me understand other people more. I'll look forward to more activities like this in the future.

    1. One other thing I need to point out is that we could group up with people who already made a comment of the draft that would be better.

  3. I have participated in group critiques in the past. This one was new in the sense that we had to read aloud instead of reading someone else's paper alone. I feel like reading aloud has some people a little bit nervous, and hearing them speak is less clear than visualizing the words in your head when reading them. It was also hard to give critiques because the narratives were usually personal and intended critiques may change the initial reading of their paper.

    2. Hey Mohammed, if you are more of a visual learner then maybe seeing the words and reading along in your head while the speaker is reading them will be more helpful.
I totally agree- narratives are quite personal and it could be a struggle to critique someone's private life. When providing feedback just keep in mind that we are not teaching others how to write their own story but advising them on what changes they could make to make it flow smoother.

  4. Today was my first time ever doing a group critique like i did today, usually i would just hand my first draft to my teacher and they would be the only person to give me feedback. Today i had 3 other people give me comments on my work. that helped me a lot. it was new for me because, i never read my draft to anyone, and while reading it, i noticed some grammatical errors. Going forward, we should have an open class critique, volunteers read their story out loud for feed back from the professor and classmates.

I learned several things today from literacy, everyone struggles with it, so there is no need to be ashamed. Everyone in my group, had some sort of trouble with expressing themselves and how they overcame that struggle. My best advice is to continue to try your best, and push yourself, some days you may feel like giving up but, you'll be able to lean about literacy and about your abilities to expand.

  6. The activity done in class was not very new to me overall but some things done in between were activities I had never done before. Actually editing other's work was a first. In high school I had only corrected work as in wrong or right but not giving feedback or suggestion on how to make their writing better and more powerful. It was helpful to hear feedback from my classmates because it helped me make notes on how to improve my draft but I prefer doing a smaller group, maybe one on one where we could go more in depth and really analyze the writing in order to make specific suggestions for improving. The group activity was overall helpful in giving me notes to make my draft powerful and more interesting.

  7. I have participated like this before. It was new like reading each other's drafts and then I had to read my own draft. I found it very helpful for me. We can change it by telling others in the group to finish reading their own drafts and explain the person that likes the draft and why.
I learned about my literacy narrative from my group is that we read our own drafts and knowing what their drafts is about. This assignment is about making your own ideas and telling yourself about your life of reading and writing. Also, we had to write comments on other student's draft and making marks like a correct mark and a question mark. The steps that I need to take next in composition and/or revision is after I see the comments on my draft, I need to rewrite my draft and making the draft more longer so that the professor would check my new draft and making sure that I check my new draft before I hand it in to the professor.

  8. My experience in the group critique is it was very insightful on helping me with my draft and upcoming final draft, it helped me establish on what i had to elaborate more on and how to structure myself. I have participated in activity's like this before in my English classes even my history classes and its a way to get a writer out of there comfort ,and for them to learn how to take criticism. working in groups like this make us better writers and see a different perception of our own writings
I don't really see a change for the groups its a great way to exchange ideas
From the group the literacy narrative i learned is to use more punctuation, describe settings more to make it more descriptive to get a feel for the story/world.

  9. No, I have never participate in an activity like this before. This activity was new to me because it made me receive amazing criticism from my group mates. I got to meet new people and hear different things about my draft from others. I like how the groups are very diverse and how people view your story differently. This is very helpful to me and my group mates because we hear different information to make our stories better and new ideas. We all get inspiration from them. I liked how my group members underlined some parts of the story that they liked, and some parts I need to provide more information in. I would not change anything about the group critics because it was amazing and I cannot wait to meet new people and hear what others think about my story moving forward. I learned that my literacy narrative was a great first draft and that I just need to add a little more information and then my draft will be ready. In my next revision, I will add more details to some of the events that happened in my story and get a good title. My draft talked about my reading background with Bible stories and how that was the first steps taken into learning how to read and write. Later on, I elaborated on how my writing has changed and gotten better. I also included many interests and different books I have read.

  10. Yes I have done an activity similar to this before, but this one I enjoyed much more because of how we focused on each others work giving each other ideas and corrections what to include in our work. I was told ways on hoe to improve my writing skills for the future, and I found that very helpful for me. hopefully we do this again and this help me improve on my writing skills.

  11. Group critiques were very common in my earlier years as a student, especially in my English classes. It was a way for us to improve on our writing with feedback given from someone else's point of view. Sometimes we may overlook certain mistakes or believe our work is at it's best but our peers may have a thousand ideas on how we could make it even better.
In today's group critique, all of the feedback I received was positive but I wish I was told how I need to improve in my writing. I know that my work is good, but I want to make it great. My group members had enjoyed the personal details I included in my narrative and didn't have much they thought I needed to change. Hopefully next time is different.

  12. I never participate in an activities like this.. It's very helpful for me because by this activities we can read other classmates paper and make commands that's help a lot. I learn about my literacy narrative from my group that I have clarify some points.
