The movies

The movies are important for Malcolm b/c he needs something to do in the daytime.
As a dealer, his work is at night, so he spends the day watching films. (This is '43 before TV is invented.) However, I think it's interesting that all of the films he mentions have important black actors, even Casablanca w/ Dooley Wilson. However, Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky were both anomalies. They had majority-black casts, something nearly unheard of at mid-century. Usually, you only saw blacks playing servants at this time in film history even though as many blacks as whites went to see the films (in the South they had to sit in the balcony).

  1. Malcolm X likes these movies because he likes to dance. He watches them to feel more entertained and experiencing dancing with the girls and something that has to do with confidence and challenging himself.

  3. Malcolm loves to go to the movies because it is very inspirational to him to see black actors get noticed for their amazing talent. Most black actors were servants back in the days and to see black actors grow is great. Malcolm loves to dance, sing, and play music. All of these things are in the movies Malcolm go to see. Seeing people in his own shoes brings him comfort, and it is like looking through a mirror. We watch movies to learn from them, help us through tough times, and maybe just for fun. Malcolm loves to see his own people grow and loves to watch his culture too.
